U14 Boys win with a clean sweep

We began our season with back-to-back matches in Brentwood against Essex and Suffolk, potentially the 2 most difficult games. Despite a poor start in the opening few minutes we dominated the game leading 3-0 at half time, and eventually winning 5-0, with Josh Harris getting a hat-trick on his county debut, and James Sandford and Duncan Graves also scoring a goal each. We started slowly again against Suffolk and despite going 0-1 down fought back to lead 2-1 at half time with goals from Josh Birt and Duncan Graves. We then went further ahead from a Tom Fanger strike at a penalty corner, before Suffolk came back strongly in the closing minutes. They scored one but our defence with goalkeeper Chris Shutes in fine form held firm and it finished 3-2.

In Watford 2 weeks later, we started brightly scoring 3 times in the first 8 minutes against Beds. The goals then came at regular intervals in a one sided contest in which our goalkeeper Jon Horsford didn’t touch the ball once. The final scoreline was an emphatic 9-0, with Ben Creese, Josh Harris and Gareth Furlong each scoring twice, with the remaining goals coming from Josh Birt, Duncan Graves and Elliott Stevens. In the second game of the day we played Norfolk who had also won all 3 of their previous games. Again we dominated play, scoring 2 goals in each half in a convincing 4-0 win. Goalscorers were Ben Creese with a further 2 goals, and Tom Fanger and Elliott Stevens each scoring from well worked short corners. It was particularly pleasing that the defence with Chris Bollom, Tom Fanger and Mark Horsford prominent, completed their third “shut-out” in 4 games.

On the finals day in Bedford we started sluggishly against Herts, although most of the play was in their half. We eventually opened with a Duncan Graves short corner, and scored 2 in quick succession with a Gareth Furlong reverse hit and Michael Franklin scoring from a short corner. With a 3-0 scoreline at half-time the second half was more open. We went further ahead with Michael Franklin scoring his second of the game, and Josh Young completed a flowing move down the right with a deflection at the left hand post. Ben Creese completed the scoring. Herts though, scored a couple of well struck short corners to make the final score 6-2. As other results had gone in our favour we approached the Lincs game knowing that title was ours. Despite the heavy rain we spent most of the half camped in the Lincs half and eventually scored with goals by Duncan Graves & Tom Fanger making it 2-0 at half-time. In the second half the pattern was much the same, although the rain eased off and we played more fluently. We scored 2 more goals from Ed Flood and Tom Fanger, taking our average to over 5 goals per game. It was also the fourth clean sheet in 6 games, with Adam Miller and Alex Bibby making a number of important tackles and interceptions.

A clean sweep then, scoring 31 goals in all and conceding just 4. Along the way we played some excellent attacking hockey, using both flanks to create a lot of goal scoring opportunities, many of which we converted. We also defended with great discipline – ask Jon Horsford, who played 100 minutes in goal and touched the ball once!
